This is a decent video but it’s not a mash-up. It’s a fanvid.

Maybe I misunderstand the term mashup. Here is what I have been told.
A mashup is two things.
1) A trailer
2) It combines elements from unrelated movies or shows to create a totally new storyline or idea.
This meets the first criteria seeing that it is a trailer. It also uses material from two completely different shows BTVS and Smallville putting two unrelated characters together. Now are mash-ups restricted to movies only? That is what I was unsure of. I thought as long as it was a trailer and that it combined unrelated characters/shows that it applied.

I agree that the video fits the criteria you mentioned, but I think this is a thematic issue.
This video is part of the fanvideo trend which started with AMVs (Anime Music Videos) and spread across fan communities everywhere. It would be considered a ‘crossover’ in both the BTVS and Smallville fandoms. The crossover being, of course, a much older idea handed down from fanfiction.
Even mash-ups which may have related fandoms (POTC and Bond, for example), don’t use that fandom as a starting point for the video. Though that argument doesn’t really hold for Star Trek mash-ups, which I’ve enjoyed here before.
To me, fanvideos are about acting out fantasies which do not occur in canon — usually a romance which could never happen. Mash-ups are about taking a film (or two or more) and turning it on its head to reveal something new. They subvert the original film in the service of comedy; they use genre archetypes to send up the modern movie industry. They align unlikely ideas, which is what makes them so original and enjoyable.
I think it’s a case of two different but similar memes, and there’s definitely an area where one blurs into the other. But to me, a trailer in which the great love between Buffy and Clark Kent is hindered only by a jealous Spike is definitely, definitely a fanvid.

very decent.
just like to give you gudos on finding the clips on these. i can understand how hard that would be especially on 2 very long tv shows.

Old Gregg,
I was confused by the last part of your post.
“But to me, a trailer in which the great love between Buffy and Clark Kent is hindered only by a jealous Spike is definitely, definitely a fanvid.”
Spike is not involved in the trailer. The storyline is based around Buffy/Clark meeting, falling in love, learning the truth about each other, and then having to deal with an evil Lex Luthor. I am just curious why you mentioned a character that wasn’t involved in the trailer.

Sorry, I must have gotten confused. That’s kind of beside the point.

I like this one, and it fits just fine with most of the rest of the items on the site. It doesn’t rise to the level of a “Shining” or “Brokeback to the Future”… but most of these are “here’s a possible storyline, let me grab stuff from different shows/movies to make a trailer for it”. It fits right in with that.
