It’s Not Easy Being Green

In brightest day… in blackest night…

With the arrival of The Green Lantern on Direct TV, it’s time to take a look underneath the hood of the Megabudgeted comic book movie through the lens of an awesome mashup trailer.

Some tenacious editor out there has mixed Lord of the Rings and The Green Lantern, creating ‘Lord of the Green Lantern’, one of the cleverest homebrewed mashups out there.

As witty as the vid is, what they’ve brought to light is the stunning similarity between the two stories. When the movie’s protagonist puts on a magic ring, he’s given superpowers, flies through the air screaming like a little boy in a sandbox, battles computer generated villains with glowing eyeballs, and never asks why everything’s so darned green.

At its best, a mashup trailer is funny and cute. At its greatest, a mashup like this illustrates how Hollywood continually feeds us processed, recycled stories. In the case of The Green Lantern, it’s almost disturbing how much the film owes to the greatest adventure story of the past decade, The Lord of the Rings trilogy.

Even stranger is the fact that The Green Lantern and The Lord of the Rings were created at around the same time. While J.R.R. Tolkien slaved away on his treasured literary masterpiece in England, sipping tea with C.S. Lewis at Oxford, Bill Finger penned the pulp comic books that progenerated The Green Lantern. Tolkien’s tome took a couple of decades to write – the trilogy wasn’t finished until 1949 and not published until 1955 – while Finger’s comics came out of the high-volume DC Comics wheelhouse. It’s extremely doubtful that the two literary giants (Finger is now recognized as a co-creator of Batman, and the sole creator of his nemesis The Joker) ever influenced each other. The similarities, in a literary sense, are less pronounced on the page, but the all-powerful ring and themes of fantastical heroism are definitely congruent. Great minds think alike.

There’s your history lesson for the day. Two literary giants, Bill Finger and J.R.R. Tolkien, have had their masterpieces shipped to Hollywood, transformed into big budget movies shrouded in a green mist, released on DVD, and mashed up into a fan made trailer on YouTube. Think on that as you watch The Green Lantern tonight.
